• Swamp laurel oak grows rapidly and usually matures in about 50 years which has led to its wide use as an ornamental.
• It is in the red oak section " Quercus laurifolia " ( swamp laurel oak ) in which it differs in several key characteristics.
• Dozens of rescuers, carrying chainsaws and wearing firefighting gear and respirators, eventually made their way to the scene through the loblolly pine saplings and thick stands of swamp laurel.
• The botanist C . J . Burke suggested that swamp laurel oak is of water oak " ( Quercus nigra ) "; it is not found outside the ranges of the two supposed parental species.
• "Exsudoporus floridanus " differs from " Exsudoporus frostii " in having a lighter cap color and in the texture of the cap surface : the subspecies is tomentose ( covered with dense, short, soft, matted hairs ) or swamp laurel oak ( " Q . laurifolia " ), and southern live oak ( " Q . virginiana " ), and it fruits between May and October.
